From the Caravan to your Kitchen
Robyn WhymanIntroducing the newest addition to the farm - the Chicken Caravan!
It's not just a quirky addition to the farm, it's a very powerful tool in our regenerative system. More than just a place to house hens, this mobile flock helps heal the soil, improving pasture health and strengthening the natural cycles that make our farm productive.
Unlike static poultry systems, our chicken caravan is designed to move regularly across the paddocks, ideally moving behind our cattle rotations. The cattle move out and the hens move in, scratching, foraging and dust-bathing, breaking up and aerating compacted soil and helping organic matter integrate back into the soil.
One of the most significant regenerative contributions of this caravan is the manure distribution. Chicken manure is rich in nitrogen and essential nutrients, providing a natural fertiliser that fees the pasture without needing any synthetic inputs. The roaming hens also help control pest populations by feeding on insects, larvae and weed seeds. This supports beneficial insects and helps foster a balance ecosystem.
Our paddock flock is still very much finding their feet. They've only been with us for six weeks and at around 22 weeks of age, they are just maturing. Of our 30-odd hens, only four have started laying and their eggs are perfectly petite.
We were pleasantly surprised how quickly they adapted to caravan life. It took just 48 hours for them to figure out that dusk means heading inside for safety, where the door automatically locks. We did have a couple that missed their curfew and got locked out. However, they were pretty resourceful, promptly hopping up on the roof for safety. For now, we're keeping the caravan close to the house so we can keep an eye on them as they settle in, checking them every evening.
Once they all start laying, we will see the benefits of pasture-raised eggs. Deeper golden yolks, richer flavour and enhanced nutritional profile. Thanks to a varied diet and active lifestyle, they can contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E and beneficial antioxidants compared to conventionally produced eggs.
We can't wait to share these beautiful eggs with you!
