The Clavering Hill Hens
At Clavering Hill, our hens are out in the sunshine every day, helping us regenerate our land and producing nutrient-rich food.
We manage two pasture-raised flocks, the Orchard Flock and the Paddock Flock, each contributing to our regenerative system in a different way.
Our flocks are a vital part of our regenerative philosophy. They scratch, they fertilise and they nourish the soil. As hens forage, they break down organic matter, spread natural fertiliser (manure) and stimulate new pasture growth. This builds soil structure, increases organic matter and helps store carbon in the ground.
They eat pests, not just grains. This helps us control pests naturally, reducing the need for chemical sprays on our land. The Paddock Flock follows behind our cattle, scratching and spreading the cattle manure, helping break the parasite cycles and assisting with a kick-start to pasture growth.
Better for Chickens
Pasture-raised hens live with freedom to roam and plenty to explore. Open pasture means lower stress, healthier birds and natural vitamin D.
Our hens display real chicken behaviour including scratching, pecking, dust bathing and chasing bugs. This keeps them active and content.
Better for Eggs
Eggs from pasture-raised hens are naturally more flavourful and nutrient-dense.
A varied diet of grass, insects, seeds and premium grain give our eggs their flavour. Studies show pasture-raised eggs can contain more omega-3s, vitamins A & E and antioxidants compared to conventional eggs. Yolk colour deepens with lush pasture.
The Orchard Flock
Our Orchard Flock live among 40 fruit trees, free-ranging in dappled shade and feasting on seasonal bugs, fallen fruit and natural forage.
They help us control orchard pests naturally, fertilise the soil around the trees, encourage healthier fruit production and build biodiversity in our orchard ecosystem.
The Paddock Flock
Our Paddock Flock live in a mobile chicken caravan, rotated across open pasture behind our cattle.
This flock helps us spread manure to feed soil microbes, breakdown cow pats and parasite cycles, stimulate pasture regrowth and improve soil carbon and structure.
Our Breeds
We choose breeds not just for egg production, but for temperament, hardiness, heritage and the role they play in our system.
A diverse flock means stronger resilience, natural foraging behaviours and gorgeous eggs of different colours and sizes.
Meet the Flock
Each week, we share a glimpse into life with our hens - from the orchard girls to the paddock champions.
